Have you ever had a period of time when you were so mentally cluttered that you felt confused or bewildered? When it seemed like no matter what you did or didn’t do, you just couldn’t get your head clear?

Of course we all have at one time or another. It’s certainly no fun feeling confused, as it can really put a damper on your mood. It may even cause you to become stuck in one or more areas of your life.

Let’s face it: We need clarity as we go about our daily lives. We need it for our jobs, our roles as parents, for problem solving, guidance, and so on.

If we don’t clean up our operating system from time to time, it’s bound to get jam packed with unnecessary things and perhaps even a virus here and there. We are doomed to experience much anxiety and stress if mental clarity is suffering.

So what's behind this feeling? How do we get there in the first place?

Understanding the Brain

It may help to learn a bit about the brain and how it operates. Think of your mind as you would think of a computer. A computer has RAM, which stands for “random access memory."

Essentially, this is its processing capacity. If you use a lot of applications on your computer, it jams up the RAM and the result is that the computer won’t run as fast.

In other words, too much activity slows down the processing system.

Our brains operate much the same way as a computer. In order for us to function with optimal clarity of mind, it is important that we declutter the thoughts that float and swirl around our minds on a continual basis. The reality is that significant mental clutter clouds clarity and slows us down!

Can You Stop Thinking?

Has anyone ever told you to stop thinking about something? Chances are the command, “Just don’t think about it," didn’t work.  In fact, it may have caused you to think even more about it!

If I were to say to you, “Stop thinking for two minutes," do you think you could do it? Let’s say you really focused on stopping the number of thoughts running through your mind. Do you think you could eliminate all of them?

Perhaps, but the chances are slim unless you’re a master meditator.

The reality is that if we aren’t consciously silencing the mind, they’re usually busy with hundreds or thousands of thoughts and we don’t even realize it. We see many things throughout the day that trigger thoughts, we engage with other people and tell them our thoughts: we subconsciously think all the time.

How do we remove the majority of these thoughts so that we can think crystal clear? We have to work on ways to boost our mental clarity.

Many people have found that meditation brings them an abundance of clarity so that they feel focused and clear on a daily basis. But there are some other handy things we can add to our day to make sure we are maximizing our efforts.

5 Fast Ways to Improve Mental Clarity

1. Meditation helps clear our minds.

It is not difficult to meditate. The challenge is actually taking the time to do it on a consistent basis. It doesn't have to be a perfect experience. Just try to calm your mind and focus on your breathing. That's it.

All you have to do is sit quietly, take a few deep breaths, relax your body, and focus on your breathing. Focus on the inward breath and then focus on the outward breath. Become aware of the present moment and delight in it.

As you meditate, your thoughts will begin to float away by default. As you stay mindful of your present moment and the life-giving breath moving in and out, you will declutter your mind. You’ll be releasing stress and negative thoughts and emotions.

You’ll begin to experience clarity of the mind.

There are many meditation techniques, so do a little research and see what resonates with you. Start with just a few minutes a day and increase the time as you feel led. You may even want to journal how your meditation experiences are going and note any key insights you gain.

2. Fasting from unhealthy drink and foods can boost your mental health.

If you take a season to stop ingesting unhealthy drinks and foods, you may be able to enhance your mental clarity.

From a young age, we’re taught that eating well helps us look and feel our physical best. What we’re not always told is that good nutrition significantly affects our mental health, too. A healthy, well-balanced diet can help us think clearly and feel more alert. It can also improve concentration and attention span. - Sutterhealth.org

As you commit to taking great care of your physical body, you’ll release toxins that could have been weighing you down. As a result, you should be able to think more clearly and feel much better physically.

3. Being in nature improves mental clarity.

Haven’t you ever taken a walk in the woods or on the beach, taken in the beauty around you, and just felt amazing?  Did life just make sense at those moments? Did you have an “aha” moment?

Aside from the natural vitamin D boost, studies have shown that being in green spaces in particular have a positive impact on our immune systems and overall health.

Get out in the beauty of nature and de-stress your life. This could mean going out on your porch, walking a trail, or taking a vacation somewhere that you can immerse yourself in nature. Revel in the serenity and beauty. Allow peace and clarity to clothe you.

4. Taking a break from technology gives our brains a rest.

Sometimes our mind can get cluttered due to the high amounts of time we spend on technology. From watching television to scrolling social media to playing video games, these are all activities that can jam pack your brain full of thoughts and perhaps even emotions.

Consider taking a break from all the technology that you can for a few days to a week and see if you can gain more clarity. If you struggle, this can be a good indicator that you've become super attached to your technology. Taking a break every now and then will certainly do you good.

5. Getting plenty of sleep helps our brains reset.

For optimal clarity of mind, get at least eight hours of sleep per night. If you’re tired from lack of sleep, you may feel like you’re in a mental fog all day long. If falling asleep has been a problem, try some guided meditations just before sleep.
