Urge surfing refers to a mental technique of observing an urge without engaging in it.

 

To understand it better, imagine how waves appear in the ocean. Waves can be powerful, but they break on the shore and pass quickly.

 

Similarly, an urge can be pretty intense, but it doesn't last longer than a few minutes unless you engage with it.

 

When you practice urge surfing, you ride the wave of an urge without any reaction. You trust that the wave will eventually get smaller and ebb away.

 

In the meantime, you just need to avoid fighting your thoughts or feeding your urges.

 

Simply bringing your attention to the breath will make your urges less powerful.

 

The urge surfing technique can be extremely helpful in reducing any unhealthy or addictive behaviors that lead to negative consequences.
