In October 2020, Rhea Holmes’ life turned upside down. After losing her husband, her grief took a tremendous toll on her mental health. She soon lost her job and was evicted, causing her to stay at her husband’s gravesite.
When police were alerted to her presence at the cemetery, Syracuse Police Officer Jamie Pastorello responded. He launched a crowdfunding campaign and connected her with the nonprofit A Tiny Home for Good, which provides affordable tiny-home rentals.
More than anything else, it was the friendship and human connection that made the greatest difference in her healing!
"It was just the right thing to do. And I wasn't going to let Rhea sleep outside again. A complete turnaround, you know, in 20 days, she went from sleeping on the cold, hard ground in a cemetery, to her own home," said Jamie.
For two-year-old Ayanna Sanchez’s birthday party, her whole family learned to sign the American Sign Language version of “Happy Birthday.”
Ayanna was born deaf, so her family came up with a plan to surprise her with a special birthday serenade.
From children to elders, every single family member went the extra mile to ensure she felt loved, included, and valued.
As Ayanna realized what was happening, she beamed with joy! This heartwarming gesture has since touched the hearts of people around the world.
“Her eyes were lit up. I was so emotional. I was pushing through, singing and signing to her. She knows she is loved,” said Ayanna’s mother, Jeanette Reyes.
The Nomad Alliance operates a one-of-a-kind mobile shelter bus in Utah, providing support to people experiencing homelessness. The organization was founded by Kseniya Kniazeva with the goal of meeting people where they are.
This mobile shelter features bathrooms, showers, heating, a food pantry, and solar panels. Also, the bus is run and managed by individuals who are currently or were formerly homeless.
The bus has been a lifeline for Michael Najera, Sky Standal, and their four-month-old baby, Micah, helping them stay together while they wait for permanent housing.
"You don't need to spend millions of dollars to provide shelter and warmth for people — you just need to believe that we're all deserving of more and better,” Kseniya said.
In Senegal, West Africa, an initiative known as the School of Husbands is challenging traditional roles at home.
The program promotes “positive masculinity” by encouraging men to take part in household chores and communicate with greater compassion toward their wives and children.
So far, more than 300 men have been trained nationwide.
Unannounced home visits by instructors have revealed tangible changes within local communities, with men actively supporting their wives and sharing domestic responsibilities.
“The school of husbands changed him a lot. Before any discussion, he would refuse to accept my truth. And as a woman, I ended up accepting that. But after going to school, he listens to me. He accepts what I say. I've even become the one guiding him,” said Fatou Diop, a participant’s wife.
