For most of us, our cup of coffee in the morning is a relaxing ritual—one that helps us ease into our days and provides many of us with immense comfort first thing.

In fact, this moment of peace and rest is the only time many people have for a brief pause during their busy and chaotic lives.

But with summer upon us, those hot mornings might call for an iced coffee over our regular hot cup o’ joe. In other words: There’s no need to give up your coffee during those warmer months (not that we’d want to)!

Plus, coffee might just have significant positive effects on our mood and mental wellness. So, let’s make our morning cup and then dig into the mental health benefits that coffee can provide!

How to Make the Viral Whipped Iced Coffee

Okay, move over regular ol’ iced coffee; There’s a new guy in town. If you haven’t heard about the viral whipped iced coffee, you’re in for a treat. This twist on an old favorite ups your coffee game and can truly set your day off on the right foot. Here’s how to make it (Hint: It’s super easy!).

How Coffee Can Wake Up Your Mind & Mood

First up, let’s get this out of the way: Yes, you can have too much coffee.

In fact, overdoing it on the coffee front can actually increase anxiety. A 2021 scientific review indicated that five cups of coffee can actually induce panic attacks in a proportion of the population.

So, how much is too much exactly? Well, the FDA suggests capping coffee intake at four to five cups a day. Yet, this may also come down to the individual. If you’re getting the shakes and increased anxiety after a few cups, you may just want to reassess your intake and cut back.

All of this is to say that even just one cup of coffee a day can have positive benefits.

Thus, it doesn’t take a lot, and you don’t need to get even close to overdoing it. As with most foods and drinks, it’s a balancing act. So, how can coffee influence your mood and improve your mental health?

1. Caffeine Increases Energy.

…As we all probably know! However, this increased energy can contribute to a better mood and increased productivity, helping us feel accomplished and good about ourselves. In other words, it can drive us to do the things that release dopamine and endorphins, which make us feel good.

2. Coffee is Associated With Reduced Depression.

Yeah, you read that right!

As one of the most common drinks consumed around the world, coffee has been shown to be linked to lower rates of depression. It’s thought the antioxidants that coffee contains might play a big role here.

They help prevent inflammation, damage, and more, ensuring your body and mind function as they should.

Another theory is that drinking coffee, in many cases, is associated with a healthy dietary pattern. For instance, many coffee drinkers may also follow the Mediterranean diet, which supports good mental and physical health.

3. Coffee is Neuroprotective!

Yup, coffee might just lower your risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia later on in life. In fact, scientific studies indicate that coffee drinkers tend to have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s, dementia, and stroke. However, the mechanism of how coffee does this exactly isn’t entirely clear.

It’s thought its antioxidant contents also play a role here. Additionally, research suggests that coffee enhances memory, even in young adults, at their least optimal time of the day (early morning).

Instructions:
  1. Mix the hot water, instant coffee, and sugar in a bowl.

  3. Add milk to a glass of ice, then pour the whipped coffee over top.
  4. Stir together, and enjoy!

You can also opt to add a bit of cinnamon on the top. If you love espresso in the morning, you can also do the same here.
