There’s something about having a nice, warm mug of cocoa while snuggled by the fire that just screams tranquility and relaxation (how can you not just melt into your chair or couch in this kind of setting?).

And here’s some great news: A cup of cocoa here or there actually might have a few mental health benefits.

But before we dig into those benefits, we have the perfect homemade hot cocoa recipe for you to try this holiday season. So, grab your favorite mug. Get ready to whisk! And maybe find a cozy blanket (and maybe a book) to snuggle up with.

The Best Homemade Hot Cocoa

I am a firm believer in balance.

This means not excluding any one food group and taking time to enjoy your favorite foods alongside nutritious options too. Now, hot cocoa is a staple when winter hits. In particular, I love this sweet, warm mug of deliciousness around the holidays.

Yet, with all the bad chitter-chatter about sugar, many people will try to avoid this delightful drink at any cost. But back to balance, my friends! Without it, life just ain’t the same. So, have the sugar once in a while—like this homemade hot cocoa!

Can This Hot Cocoa Really Contribute to Better Mental Wellness?

If there’s anything I’ve learned, food deprivation and restriction only lead to increased cravings. Plus, life is too short. So, have that hot cocoa!

Yet, it’s not all about keeping cravings at bay; Hot cocoa actually can have some interesting benefits for our mental health beyond merely a tasty treat. So, let’s take a closer look.

Milk is Almost the Perfect Snack

With almost a perfect blend of macronutrients, milk has so much goodness to offer.

Whole milk also contains plenty of nutrients, from calcium to vitamin D and many more. Interestingly, inadequate amounts of vitamin D (which we get less of in the winter due to fewer hours of sun!) can lead to reduced serotonin.

Serotonin is essential for mood regulation, which is why it’s often called the “feel good” hormone.

With milk’s blend of many trace vitamins and minerals, it also ensures your body’s systems run smoothly, contributing to good ol’ “balance” across the board.

Cocoa Powder is Packed With Antioxidants

Cocoa powder is filled with flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants. These compounds have been linked to improved mood, reduced stress, and better cognitive function.

The theory behind this all? Cocoa flavonoids may increase blood flow to the brain, enhancing brain health and lowering stress levels. It may also have protective effects, in this way, which may prevent dementia and even decrease the risk of strokes.

Additionally, cocoa can stimulate the brain to release endorphins and serotonin, which are natural mood boosters. In fact, research indicates that it may have antidepressant effects, meaning it could help treat depression (which we think is pretty awesome!).

Sugar Gives Your Brain a Boost

Okay, so too much sugar can be a bad thing. But, as part of a healthy diet, sugar is vital for adequate energy. In particular, sugar is essential for proper brain functioning.

Proper memory, thinking, and learning capabilities are all linked to blood sugar levels. If the brain doesn’t have enough access to glucose (aka sugar), your body won’t be able to effectively produce neurotransmitters and hormones, which are essential to a steady and happy mood.

This means that we need a bit of sugar. No, we shouldn’t go overboard. But one mug of hot cocoa is likely okay (assuming you follow a healthy and balanced diet the majority of the time!).

Dark Chocolate for a Mood Boost

Dark chocolate, like bittersweet chocolate, contains antioxidants, which can help protect your brain from free radicals. On top of this, chocolate may increase serotonin levels in the brain via tryptophan, which helps improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression.
