So, I’m a huge fan of chocolate chip banana bread (who isn’t?). And arguably, eating slice after slice is jam-packed with lots of sugar and very little protein or other goodies. So, this got me thinking: How could I make this sweet treat a bit healthier and still enjoy it for breakfast?
The answer: Chocolate Banana Overnight Oats!
This heartwarming blend of chocolate and banana, paired with the wholesome goodness of oats, creates a breakfast that is delicious and even beneficial for your mental health. So, why does this combination work wonders for your mood?
In this article, we offer up the recipe and explore the science behind how these foods can positively impact our emotional well-being.
So, let’s take a closer look.
I love recipes that take minimal effort and time—and this one is no exception. It literally takes five minutes to put together, followed by six hours of chill time (which can easily be achieved overnight, so it’s ready to enjoy in the morning!).
This can be especially good if come morning time, you just can’t be bothered to make breakfast. With this recipe, it’s already done.
All you need to do is grab a spoon and dig in!
No time before getting to the office? Grab it out of the fridge and bring it with you.
So, how can you make this yummy and sweet breakfast treat?
It’s not all about how yummy this recipe is (although that’s always a must!). The ingredients in these overnight oats offer tons for our mind and mental wellness. Below, we take a closer look.
Bananas are a great source of natural sugars (fructose, glucose, and sucrose), which provide quick energy. Combined with oats, the digestion of these sugars is also partially slowed down. This is good since it means we don’t experience a huge energy high and crash, which often also impacts our mood.
Bananas also contain tryptophan, an amino acid that the body converts into serotonin. As you may already know, serotonin plays a major role in how we feel. In many ways, it’s a natural mood stabilizer, helping us avoid depression and stay balanced.

In particular, dark chocolate (which can be awesome as a topping in this recipe) is packed with flavonoids. These compounds are known to improve mood and induce a feeling of calmness and contentment. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, the body's natural "feel-good" chemicals.
These flavonoids are also thought to have neuroprotective effects, meaning, yes, eating some dark chocolate might just help prevent the development of neurological disorders and dementia.

Oats are rich in fiber. Fiber helps to slow down the digestion of carbohydrates, leading to more stable blood sugar levels. Fluctuations in blood sugar can impact mood and energy levels, so stabilizing these levels can contribute to improved mood and mental clarity. But there’s more!
Fiber is also crucial for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. It feeds the beneficial bacteria in the gut, which in turn produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, propionate, and acetate. These SCFAs have anti-inflammatory properties and are vital for gut health.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting: Research continues to emerge about the gut-brain axis. The gut and brain communicate via the gut-brain axis, a complex network that includes the nervous system, hormones, and immune responses.
This means that a healthy gut microbiome can positively influence this communication, impacting mood and cognitive functions.
In other words, how your gut is feeling can drastically impact your mood! But having adequate fiber in your diet, such as eating oats, can help improve this delicate microbiome balance.
Oats also contain iron, low levels of which can lead to fatigue and mood disorders. Thus, getting enough iron, especially for those who may be deficient or borderline deficient (blood tests will show whether this is the case or not), is crucial for both physical and mental well-being.
Chocolate chips, coconut flakes, sliced bananas, walnuts, and almonds all make great toppings to this delicious breakfast or snack.
And make these overnight oats! I always say when something takes less than five minutes, just do it. And this recipe literally takes less than five minutes to throw together. Plus, the results are 110% worthwhile. Breakfast is done, and you are almost guaranteed a stress-free morning.
