Furry friends offer some amazing benefits, and these benefits go both ways!

You have a snuggle buddy who is always ecstatic to see you, and your little furball gets a loving and caring home for life. It’s no secret that many pets become part of the family. The love shared is unlike any other!

So, if you’ve been on the fence about whether or not you should adopt a little animal friend, this is your sign. There are so many animals that need homes and that would bring an abundant amount of love and happiness into your life (and vice versa). And if you aren’t convinced… keep reading!

Why You Should Adopt a Furry Friend

Furry friends add so much joy to our lives. From the moment we get home from work, they’re there. If you’re feeling sad, they’ll be there, ready to snuggle! If you’re feeling happy, they’ll also be right there with you, ready to celebrate (or at least wag their tail or shake their little body with excitement!). On top of this, here are five other reasons you should adopt a pet ASAP:

1. You’re saving multiple lives.

It might seem like you’re only offering one animal a new home.

Yet, when you adopt, you make room for another animal at the shelter, ensuring they don’t get put down simply because there isn’t enough space. If anything, this is the saddest of circumstances.

Many shelters end up putting out adoption notices, desperate for someone to take the animals since they are lacking the capacity to keep up.

Currently, there is a bit of a shelter crisis happening. While last year during COVID, a lot of people were happy to adopt. Today, many are actually getting returned back to the shelters, causing capacity issues.

Thus, when you adopt, you save more than just one life. Now, that is something you and your furry friend can feel ultra-good about!

2. They’ll improve your mental health and combat loneliness.

Pets, more specifically dogs and cats, significantly reduce feelings of loneliness. They even help decrease anxiety and depression, as well as encourage regular exercise which can help boost your mood.

In fact, studies show that having a pet:

  • Lowers blood pressure.
  • Elevates serotonin and dopamine, helping you find calm and relax.
  • Decreases your doctor visits.
  • Reduces your risk of heart disease.

How do pets do all of this and improve your mental health? It all comes down to helping fulfill one of the most essential human needs: touch

By doing so, cuddling and petting your furry friend can help you de-stress and even potentially forget about the worries of the day. What’s not to love?

3. They’ll help you stay active.

Part of getting a pet is looking after them. For many people, this can create a higher sense of purpose. At the same time, it can also keep you more active. For example, a dog needs daily walks! A cat might require playtime and same goes for a rabbit or other animals.

4. It actually costs less.

A brand-new puppy or kitten comes with many expenses.

They’ll need vaccinations, to get spayed/neutered, and more. Yet, adopting can save you a bit on these up-front costs. Additionally, pets past those initial puppy or kitten years tend to already be house-trained, which means you also might not have to invest too much time in training!

5. You’ll get to experience unconditional love.

This is the best part.

You aren’t just saving a life (or multiple lives). You aren’t just offering your home to a new furry friend. You’re creating a relationship with your new pet that is unmatched. The connection between owner and pet is so special.

In fact, this is why many people argue that their dog or cat is another member of the family.

They become not just a pet, but a friend, a confidant, a comforting snuggle when you need it, a source of joy and entertainment, and so much more.

How You Can Adopt

So, you’ve decided you’re ready to become a pet parent. Where should you start?

First, it might be deciding what type of pet you desire or need. For example, allergies are all too real, and this can greatly impact what type of dog or cat you get. Ideally, if you have allergies, you’ll want a hypoallergenic pet, such as a Chinese Crested Dog or a Cockapoo.

If you don’t like cats or dogs, there are also other pets you can adopt, including rabbits, birds, reptiles, snakes, horses, and more.

Then, it’s all down to looking up adoption shelters in your area.

For instance, the Humane Society is always a good option. However, it may depend on where you live as to whether or not this is viable for you. Look up local animal shelters near you. And make sure you do your research. What does adoption involve? What do they provide before adoption?
